In the age of high stakes testing, the Music from the Inside Out curriculum is a perfect way to bring music back into the classrooms. Piloted in classrooms around the country, the curriculum blends the “Reading and Writing Workshop” approach to literacy with music education. It lets kids inside the world of music, by helping them construct their own understandings about what proficient listeners think and feel as they listen to music, and what musicians think and feel as they play music. Based in part on the highly acclaimed documentary, the curriculum includes material shot for the film and re-edited for classroom use. Lessons are not only intended for music educators. Teachers of other subjects who may not have a music background will find plenty of support for teaching children how to listen proficiently, and to participate and engage in music and music-making.
